caedes gently dipped her muzzle into the clear water of the lake. as the cool liquid slid down her throat, she let out a sigh of contentment. after caedes had drank her fill, she slowly waded further into the lake, the blue depths calling to her and tugging her deeper. water and other non-living organisms were the only things she could not wither, only nothing submerged in water would decay no matter if they were alive. water was her buffer, it protected things from her. from her terrible nature.

aecus watched his sister stand tranquilly in the still lake, water slowly lapping at her legs. this was one of the few times when they could be separated without caedes killing everything within the perimeter. and so, he left to explore the new lands further, knowing caedes would be fine.

The stallion walked softly, through the dawn light, the only noises being that of the last few crickets chirping softly down the hill. His white mane falling loosely to his right, he walked towards the stream he knew all too well. When he was fighting his way to the tree, Makivis, Mirage, and him had stopped and stayed at this stream for a few days. Resting, recovering. It was fairly secluded, and most didn't even know it was here.
Something pulled him up short.
One horse stood in the stream, another, just out of it, feet in the muddy banks around it.

aecus did not notice the other horse nearby, and went off on his own to find a place for he and his sister to use as shelter for later on, as well as familiarize himself with the land.

caedes saw a small fish darting around her tail, which floated in the water next to her. a small smile came to her face, and she silently nosed at it, causing it to cautiously shoot away. after a minute or two the fish came back, slowly swimming in circles near her. caedes lifted her head again, and stared off into the distance at the rising sun. "the birth of a new day." was soundlessly formed on her lips, and a single black rose dropped from her mane to float upon the glassy surface of the water. when she bent down to push it around, she saw a form behind her, standing next to a large tree. silver hair adorned the being, which she recognized to be a darkly colored stallion. caedes started up in surpsrise and turned to face him, backing further into the lake.

He looked at the mare, who had just now seen him, with a smile. He walked a few steps closer, suddenly no more than a few feet away.
"Beautiful isn't it?" He held his tail up, keeping it from dragging on the muddy ground, but the mist covered most of it, making the ground seem like such a distant place, below the heaven that they set on. The heaven that pivoted on such a fine point, another speck of dust added to one side, and the whole thing goes sideways, crashing to the ground, shattering on impact.
"You must be new. My name's Ezazel, welcome to Myst." He didn't often greet the newcomers, but it provided a great way to find out which horses might be able to help with the lydes, and took his mind off of everything that had been going on.

caedes nodded warily, the words from her earlier meeting with the stallion who permitted them to stay in region two now lost. not a sound would escape her throat, her ability to speak suddenly gone. caedes inwardly winced. aecus was no doubt a good distance away by now, and would not hear any struggle if there would be one.

when he walked to the muddy banks, caedes kept in the lake. she noticed his silver tail kept out of the brown muck, and glanced at her own similarly colored hair, noticing with regret the muddy stains. the strange stallion didn't seem like he was planning to move on, and so caedes prepared herself for a one sided conversation unless her voice decided to stop being fickle and choke out a few raspy words.

Why were horses always afraid here? He thought, lowering his head, matching the eye level of the mare, closing the gap even further.
"You don't have to be afraid." He whispered. "Here." He pulled the dagger out of it pouch, then threw it to the ground, sliding against the mud. He took a step back, not wanting to scare her off, running her into the woods, to meet the lydes in their woods, causing a hopeless, one sided battle.

caedes smiled slightly. it wasn't that she were afriad of him, per se, but she could be a creature of caution. when he pulled the dagger out of the sheath and threw it into the mud, caedes sighed at the beautifully crafted weapon being coated in slime and filth. closing her silver eyes, caedes took a deep breath. "you," she paused, swallowing and trying to speak again., "you didn't have to ruin your dagger. more often it is the one wielding the weapon who should be feared." her father had once said such a thing to her and aecus, but he was long dead. it wouldn't do to open old wounds.

"who are you?" caedes asked. her throat was starting to burn a little bit, but it wasn't bad yet. as soon as the words left her mouth caedes realized they were a bit rude, being that she was the newcomer.

"Haha. Well. It's wash off." Ezazel laughed at himself, most horses didn't think that rationally. A long time ago, he overheard a human conversation. 'Guns don't kill people. People kill people' one man had said. How true had this become with time! He remembered the day, many years ago, when he had lead the army, charging at Nyle. Smiling before he cut his throat open with the dagger. He couldn't remember how many years ago that had been, well over 500, that's for sure.
"Me?" He asked. Not in the way that demanded an answer. More or less just opening up the question.
"A horse out of place. To put it short. I have been gone from Italia for quite some time now. My, how the world has changed. Have you met an immortal Saphyra? They might have made mention of a great war, and let me tell you. I was fighting. Not for them. But for Nyle, a cold, heartless bastard. But that's old news, such a long time ago it's almost like a dream now."

he intrigued her. a saphyra? she had heard of them, but never met one. caedes nodded along with his story, making no comment but using body language to express the words she would say. it was something of a new concept to caedes, that the horse in front of her would so readily talk about his history, albeit it being vague. then again, she did suppose it was something to be proud of. her history was nothing she would happily recall.

"i suppose i should introduce myself now." caedes said, thoughtfully thinking out an answer. she didn't want to say too much. "i am dulcis caedes, or caedes. my life is not a tale of glory, but one of loss." caedes sighed. "i have a rare... condition. i do not make for good company. most are safer avoiding me."

Well. Finally a horse that wouldn't bore him to death with every detail of their life. He thought,
"Who's your friend?" He couldn't see him, but the smell travelled well in the breeze.

caedes glanced towards the forest. "my brother, aecus. he just went off to familiarize himself with the land here." she replied. a little bit of jealousy shot through her. if caedes were to go off on her own, everything would wither and die at her feet. yet aecus would cause everything to flourish. he had freedom where she did not.

"You know that can be dangerous? Right. I mean, there are things in these woods." Ezazel lost some of his edge, the mare before him talked with such ease. Not timid, hiding behind a rock like he had originally expected. "We call them lydes. Dammed things. Shameless, heartless things. Kill just for the sport of it." He continued to tell her how they looked, acted. About the fact they hunt in threes, stalk for hours on end.
"Please. Just be careful."

caedes shrugged. "he is capable of caring for himself. we are used to dealing with the lydes while we took residence in the shadow territories. horrible creatures." she said, frowning. "never served any purpose but to terrorize the herds." sighing, caedes dipped her head down and pushed around the water for a moment, chasing a fish around. "it is so much nicer here...." she mused quietly. "i," caedes paused, "could you tell me about some of the places here?"

"You lived in the lyde territory for how long?" How had she been
able to live here for any more than a day? Meeting anything that
hadn't been eaten alive from that territory was rare. Years ago he
remembered being barely alive, stumbling out into the open ground,
after weeks of being on edge, it was hard to settle down.
"Yeah. Most of the rest of the forest is just full of little streams and
some cliff drop offs. Just up the hill is full of a lot more lakes
and a rather large waterfall. I can tour you if you want."

"we were not there long, four or five months at the most. aecus and i grew tired of the hostile predators and finally left for here." caedes replied softly. "because of certain circumstances, we were able to survive it." she could tell that there was a small amount of doubt and wonder in ezazel's eyes, at the fact that she and her brother were still in relatively good health.

she stood there a moment, hesitation clouding her grey eyes. "is there," she paused, looking away, "any way to travel by following a stream or creek?" caedes hadn't planned on bringing up the subject of what she considered her aberration, and it was for that reason she rarely talked. inevitably she would have to explain why she was unable to accompany anyone without aecus or without being grounded in water. caedes was eager to explore the territory further, but did not want to harm anything in the fresh environment.

aecus traveled through a thin forest, looking back but once at his dark sister standing in the lake. she would be fine, as he knew, but he worried for her. over the years he had become very good at hiding his concern for caedes would brush it off and claim she was fine. but he knew she was slowly dying each day that she arose and something else died, every time something withered because of her. aecus sighed. it was hardly fair. his own gift taunted her, for he was everything she could never be. caedes was strong, however. no one would ever fully understand the burden she carried, not even her own brother. aecus did know that caedes was capable of most anything, and would not give in to anything. the fact that she was still a kind soul testified for that.

as he wandered further into the forest aecus made sure to keep the sun directly behind him. branches cracked under his hooves as he trotted on, determined to find a suitable place to settle for a bit and learn more about the surrounding areas. if anyone else were to see him they would notice that the path he took turned greener, that the plants there would shoot up in growth. if aecus ever needed to turn back, he had a trail of string, only in the form of 'life'. a sickly bird laid in his path. aecus stopped a moment, and nuzzled the struggling creature. within moments the bird was well again and flew up into the green canopy overhead. aecus's abilities were limited to organisms that had once held life, and still had a fragment of that life in them still. he was unable to restore life to any places of carnage left by caedes, for she could kill anything that lived beyond repair.

Dreamer trotted through the winding trees, following the sun. Not before long, she spotted a distant figure walking. She sped up to a canter, then a gallop. The brisk air surged around her, and everything else was a blur. She finally stopped a good 10 feet away from the horse, and noticed that the path he walked was greener than that of the spot she was standing on.
So the grass is greener on the other side, huh? she thought to herself.
Dreamer trotted behind the mysterious horse.
"Hey!" she said, in a friendly way.

aecus started. "hello." he replied, surprised at the fact that he had been so distracted as to not realize another horse had approached. he tilted his head as he took in the brilliant hues of the mare's coat. "my name is aecus, and you are...?" he questioned, smiling slightly. it never hurt to gain a few acquaintances, especially in a new territory.
